Overview
A baby does not use its digestive tract in the womb, but once its born must begin feeding and digesting on its own. The digestive tract relies on smooth muscle, which is controlled reflexively, not voluntarily. A lack of motor sensory reflexive response in the digestive tract means major dysfunction. This results in chronic constipation, chronic gut bacterial infections, and improper nutrition in autistic children.
A child or pediatric, neurologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders in children from the neonatal period through adolescence. Some of the conditions overlap with those seen by adult neurologists, and others are unique to this younger population.
